Suzy’s Story
Suzy McGrane was just 28 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After fighting courageously, she reached remission—and immediately turned her focus outward, dedicating herself to supporting other women facing the same battle and rallying volunteers to help.
When her cancer returned in 2004, Suzy faced it with the same strength and grace—leaving behind a lasting legacy that continues to shape how we support women battling breast cancer today.
But her impact did not end there.
Today, Suzy’s spirit lives on through Share Our Suzy Lowcountry (SOS), providing financial support for the everyday expenses insurance doesn’t cover for patients battling breast cancer in the Tri-County area of South Carolina.
SOS is a completely volunteer-driven organization, which means most of every dollar raised goes directly to helping patients—not overhead. To date, SOS has provided over $1 million in local support, offering critical assistance to women when they need it most.
Suzy’s journey opened our eyes to the real challenges breast cancer patients face beyond their diagnosis. We saw firsthand:
- The strain of balancing everyday expenses while facing mounting medical bills
- The difficulty of finding childcare during treatments
- The emotional and financial burden of costs not covered by insurance, like wigs
- The reality that breast cancer can impact women at any stage of life—even those just beginning their futures
Because of this, SOS steps in to meet these urgent, practical needs—ensuring no woman has to face them alone. No woman should have to worry about how she’ll pay her bills while fighting for her life.
Your support helps provide:
- Transportation to medical appointments
- Groceries and everyday essentials
- Childcare during treatment
- Utility bill assistance
- Wigs and prosthetic bras
- Necessary medical equipment
- Hotel lodging for patients and families traveling for care
This is how Suzy’s legacy lives on—through compassion, community, and direct support for women in our own backyard.
“Thank you for helping me. I don’t know where we would be without SOS. I didn’t have the money to pay for gas to get to my chemo treatments – the gas cards you gave me saved my life.”
